Start with the cheapest tier that could work rather than the one that definitely will. Most targets tolerate datacentre IPs, and moving up to residential is a config change, not a migration.

Route through the provider's gateway host and port with your credentials, confirm your exit IP resolves where you expect, then run a small sample and measure the success rate before scaling. A 90% success rate at $3/GB costs less per usable page than 99% at $8.

Set a hard concurrency limit on your side. Providers advertise unlimited sessions, but the site you are scraping does not, and hammering it is the fastest way onto a block list.

Do I need residential proxies for scraping?
Often not. Datacentre IPs are considerably cheaper and work on many targets. Residential and mobile IPs are worth the premium once a target starts blocking datacentre ranges — test the cheap option first rather than assuming.
How much bandwidth will I actually use?
A text-heavy page is typically tens of kilobytes; a page rendered with images and scripts can be several megabytes. If you are billed per GB, blocking images and unnecessary assets is usually the single biggest saving available.
Is scraping legal?
It depends on the jurisdiction, the data, and the terms of the site you are collecting from. Public factual data is treated differently from personal data or content behind a login. This is not legal advice — take advice on your specific case.
